However, Adobe's roadmap also shows that there will be no direct successor to the Luma theme.

Against this background, the questions "What's next?", "What options and alternatives are there?" naturally arise for every online merchant who is currently using the Luma theme. Alternatives are there?" and also for online merchants who are considering Magento as a future online store the question arises with which frontend they can operate their Magento store can be operated.

But before we go into the question of what the consequences of the Luma theme end-of-life are and the frontend for Magento will continue, a few words about the current situation around Magento in general.
Most recently, we had reported on this in our blog post Yet Another View On The Future Of Magento. Meanwhile there is the very readable "January 2022" Update by Magento Open Source Community Alliance (MOSCA)
Probably the most important statement from this update: "Magento 2 is in fantastic shape, thanks to a lot of effort put in by both Adobe and the community. The platform has never been more flexible and stable, filling all merchants’ needs." We can only agree with this and also with the otherwise consistently positive message of the update.

No question, it would be even more positive if there was a stronger interest and commitment to Magento Open Source on the part of Adobe and in particular to continue to position Magento as a solution for small and medium-sized retailers, both in terms of product and marketing. After all, Magento's roots are right here and it was this broad user base that was the foundation on which Magento could become what it is - arguably the best e-commerce solution in the world that can meet the needs of small merchants as well as enterprise-level requirements.

But that's the way it is, the decision on the part of Adobe to address only enterprise customers with "Adobe Commerce" and to rely more and more on dovetailing with other Adobe services has been made.
However, this is not a reason to worry, thanks to the MOSCA initiative and the unique Magento community, Magento Open Source will continue to be a first-class choice also for small and medium-sized e-commerce businesses.

According to Adobe, the Luma theme has had its day and will no longer be developed. A concrete date for the "end" of the Luma Theme does not exist yet, but it should at least not come in the short term. The "sundowning" of the Luma theme is probably to be expected sometime after the "PWA Studio", whose current proof-of-concept implementation is the "Venia Storefront", has reached a final state.

However, no further development also means: There will probably only be necessary security patches, maintenance updates, etc. for the Luma theme, but no significant new features and no more innovations.
In other words, the Luma theme will never achieve adequate performance and contemporary PageSpeed or Core Web Vitals values.

For new projects that are now planned with Magento, the Luma theme can no longer be recommended in good conscience.
No matter if it is a completely new e-commerce project with Magento, a migration from another cart software or platform, or just a re-design or optimization of an existing Magento store. In these cases, using the Luma theme would be an investment that would be obsolete by the time of implementation. A contemporary performance and user experience is not achievable with the Luma theme with reasonable effort anyway.
For new projects, you should urgently choose an alternative to avoid having to redo everything in maybe 1 or 2 years.

No need to panic! For Magento stores that currently use the Luma theme or a third-party theme based on Luma as their frontend, there is nothing to stop them from continuing to use it for some time. At least as long as it works satisfactorily and well.
However, it is still advisable for these online stores to deal with the topic of the frontend as early as possible, to look at alternatives, and to consider migration in the longer-term planning.

But you should also be aware of this: Every investment in further optimization of the existing Luma theme frontend is an investment in a dying technology. An investment in a frontend that will most likely be replaced by a new one in the not too distant future. So instead of putting even bigger budgets into a Luma frontend now, it might make more sense to migrate to an alternative earlier than absolutely necessary and use this budget directly for the optimization of a new frontend.

There will be no direct successor for the Luma theme from Adobe.
But it is probably not least due to the shortcomings of the Luma theme that both Adobe and the Magento community have been looking for alternatives for some time. With the result that there are already several alternatives today, with fundamentally different approaches and solutions.
This is certainly not the worst development for the Magento ecosystem because a diverse offering will ultimately also lead to competition and thus more innovation. We briefly present the available alternatives below:

For several years now, "Progressive Web Applications" (PWA) or more precisely "Headless Frontends" have been propagated as the future for e-commerce frontends. Several PWA frontends are now available for Magento. Besides "PWA Studio" from Adobe, the designated successor frontend for the Luma theme, VueStorefront, ScandiPWA and others.

We at JaJuMa could never really do much with the hype around PWAs. Whenever we looked at one of these solutions, we were not really convinced. The general architecture of these headless solutions, the underlying technology, the performance that couldn't fulfill the promises in the end, and especially the complexity associated with PWAs during the implementation... None of these PWA frontends could meet our requirements to provide our customers with solutions that meet our quality and budget needs.
We are glad that we and our customers have been spared the negative experiences of other agencies with the implementation of PWA frontends.

It may be that there are use cases for which a PWA is the right solution (e.g., possibly in enterprise-level application scenarios). However, it has become apparent that our assessment of the PWA topic was not entirely wrong. The maturity level of the available PWA solutions often still leaves a lot to be desired, which makes extensive in-house developments necessary. A really good performance is difficult to achieve with PWAs (contrary to the usual promises), a corresponding project team is required to handle the complexity associated with PWAs, and so on.
A PWA solution is therefore in our view only worth considering for online merchants who have a specific requirement that can be better solved with PWAs (Whatever that is...) and want to invest the appropriate budget for such a project.

It remains to be seen if there will be more alternatives until or with the actual end of the Luma theme. For more competition between the different approaches, this would certainly not be the worst for the Magento ecosystem.
For example, there is already the "Breeze" frontend from SwissUpLabs which follows a similar approach as the Hyvä theme. In our opinion, however, less sophisticated and well thought out than Hyvä Themes.

There is a lot going on in the Magento world!
This is not a cause for concern. Even if Adobe withdraws from marketing Magento Open Source and focuses primarily on its enterprise solution Adobe Commerce and the integration of other Adobe services. Everything points to the fact that Magento in the open-source variant will continue to be the leading e-commerce solution in the future, especially for small and medium-sized online retailers.

Hyvä Themes is the best example of the strength and innovation of the Magento community. After Adobe failed to create an adequate frontend for Magento, Willem Wigman, the creator of Hyvä Themes, stepped into the breach and fills this gap.

There are many extensions available promising to make a Magento store “GDPR compliant”. If you are running a Magento 2 store, you are probably already using one or the other of these, such as an extension adding a Cookie Banner as required by EU Cookie Law (everybody loves them, right?). E. g. “Amasty Cookie Consent” or “Mirasvit GDPR for Magento 2” that is also compatible with Hyvä Theme.
However, none of these extensions will give you full GDPR compliance, there are many aspects to be considered and followed when it comes to being GDPR compliant and respecting customers' privacy.
In the following sections, we will introduce 6 Magento Extensions that will help you get your Magento 2 store GDPR ready - but also don’t miss the bonus section below with tips that will help you to stay on top of the GDPR game by giving your Magento 2 store a performance boost.

1. Matomo Analytics

The ban of Google Analytics in Europe might be just around the corner as first court judgements and proceedings in Austria and The Netherlands suggest (source). But Magento merchants do not have to be afraid of losing the benefits and insights provided by an Analytics tool. Luckily there is an alternative available that can be integrated and used with Magento 2 easily:

2. Honey Spam Anti-Spam

Spam customer registrations, spam newsletter subscribers, spam contact messages, spam product reviews… It’s a common problem in Magento stores and any website that provides forms for customers. Any form that allows customers to interact with you as a store owner will be abused by spammers and spambots sooner or later if not protected appropriately.
Out-of-the-box, Magento provides Google ReCaptcha as a means against spam, so it is easy to use and works reliably. However, using Google ReCaptcha or similar 3rd party services for spam protection is not GDPR compliant.
Of course, simply disabling ReCaptcha and enduring all the spam to be expected when doing so is no option. But no worries, as a Magento merchant, you can protect yourself and your store against spam reliably, easily AND GDPR compliant:

3. Video Widget

Videos and multimedia play an important role when it comes to creating emotions and affection for a brand and your products in your Magento 2 store. Many store owners prefer to have their videos hosted on YouTube. Unfortunately, embedding externally hosted videos requires a user consent before loading any content from the from a 3rd party video platform and can be a performance killer, thanks to loading the video in an iFrame alongside with tons of additional scripts. But there is a solution available.

4. Shariff Social Share Buttons

Adding social media sharing buttons is a great way to increase visibility on social media, allowing customers to interact with your brand and drive more visitors to your store. No surprise most online stores want to integrate sharing buttons. But the sharing buttons provided by social networks such as Facebook or Twitter are not GDPR compliant. Of course, that does not mean you have to abstain from adding social sharing buttons to your Magento 2 store:

If you had to deal with GDPR compliance before, the privacy requirements addressed by the first 4 Magento extensions we introduced above, may have not been entirely new to you. But let’s take it one step further and look into some lesser-known aspects of GDPR compliance.

5. Image Optimization and GDPR Compliance

Image optimization is no GPDR topic, right?
Well, actually it is…
When striving for fast page loads and top performance, optimizing images plays a key role. It is often recommended by other agencies to simply use a Content Delivery Network (CDN) for optimizing images in Magento 2 stores. Since image CDNs can be integrated rather easily nowadays, this might sound like an easy and fast solution for a big challenge.

However, using a CDN actually comes with a few downsides:
In fact, CDNs are a privacy issue because images are loaded from 3rd party servers which enables these CDN service providers to track your customers and collect their data, which is not allowed by GDPR and privacy laws without explicit user consent.
Another often overseen downside of using CDNs is, that the performance can be affected negatively because another TCP/IP connection is required for loading images from their servers.
Furthermore, image CDNs are usually not able to address image optimization aspects beyond e. g. image compression or image conversion such as lazy loading images. adding width/height attributes, asynchronous decoding…

Why pay for a service that introduces a compliance risk while providing a sub-optimal and incomplete solution for image optimization?

6. Font Files / Icon Fonts and GDPR Compliance

Websites and also Magento stores usually use one or even more fonts for achieving the desired design and look and feel. Out of convenience and/or false assumptions regarding performance and fast loading for these fonts, the font files are often loaded e. g. from Google Fonts or other CDN hosts.
But loading assets such as font files from 3rd party hosts is actually a compliance issue if done without explicit user consent.
The simple fix for this case:
Load your font files from you own server, this avoids the privacy issue and is faster in most cases anyway.

Reducing or avoiding font files altogether in the first place would be the even better way to go when it comes to performance. But being limited to web fonts only may not be an option in cases where some specific font is wanted or required for the purpose of having a distinctive design or following corporate identity rules.
However, icons are another use-case for font files. With many famous icon sets, e. g. Font Awesome, being available as a full collection of icons as one single font file. While easy to implement, the downside of these icon fonts is:
The browser needs to download the full set of icons, even if only a few icons are used on the site.
For performance optimization it would be better to load only the icons needed, e. g. not as a font file, but as inline SVGs.

Compliance with GDPR and other privacy laws and regulations as e. g. the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) may not be the most fun topic. In fact, for most online merchants it is a rather annoying thing to deal with, that seems even mostly as obstructive to their business.
However, when tackled in the right way, following compliance and data protection rules doesn't necessarily mean abstaining from functions that are critical for online merchants. Be it web analytics, embedding videos, or other functions often implemented via 3rd party services for managing a Magento online store and the user experience customers expect.
With the 6 Magento extensions introduced in this post, we showed that there are solutions available to replace incompliant implementations with alternative approaches that are often even the better way to go.
GDPR compliance does not only mean troublesome following of rules and regulations, but it can also be an opportunity. An opportunity to build trust in your brand by respecting your customer's privacy, but also an opportunity to improve your business by e. g. using unsampled analytics as a base for your business decisions, having full control over how your Magento store works instead of relying on (and maybe even paying for!) 3rd party services and last but not least even for improving the performance and user experience in your store.
When means for compliance can go hand in hand with improving your business, can be a driver for optimizing your store and can even help you saving money, its suddenly a more "sexy topic", right?

Upfront: The day the letter was published, after reading both, I was at first wondering why each of the two letters:
- Open Letter by MOSCA (Magento Open Source Community Alliance)
- The Future of Magento Open Source by Hyvä
seemed to set a quite different tone. However, wordings aside, with the core message and intentions behind the letters,
I can fully agree and signed the very first day.

Magento is owned by and part of Adobe. I strongly believe this can be a great setup or partnership for everyone involved. Even if there are different goals and targets in play.
Adobe targeting the Enterprise market, seeing the Magento core product only as part of their “Experience Cloud” range of services.
The Magento Open-Source community being more focused on Small and Mid-Sizes businesses.
The borders between these goals here are fluent anyway, the requirements and demands shared and overlapping in big parts. If done right, everyone involved in the Magento ecosystem can benefit greatly from each other, no matter what the main goal is followed.
Magento Open Source can benefit from the big name, brand reputation, marketing, and also financial power that Adobe can provide.
Adobe and its customers can benefit from innovation, knowledge sharing, additional services, and extensions provided by an army of developers and agencies.
Going separate ways would hurt Adobe as well as the Magento Community.
I dearly hope this is not gonna happen.
Together we are stronger!

Guess everyone who has been around with Magento knows, there has been some dissatisfaction within the community at least since back when Magento 2 was released and failed to meet the expectations. In the past years, this dissatisfaction grew into the frustration that led to the letters we are all debating now. How did that happen?

Focus On Enterprise Solutions

There are many reasons for this situation. Many community members voiced their concerns, before and after the letter, so no need to repeat them all. But a lot of these concerns come down to Adobe's increasing focus on their Magento Enterprise product and services, while at the same time ignoring or at least giving not enough attention to Magento Open source and the needs of SMBs (Small and medium-sized businesses).
The move to more microservices while at the same time lack of innovation, countless open bugs, ignored PRs made many members in the community feel ignored and left behind.

And Even More More Focus On Enterprise Solutions And Less On Smaller Businesses

Too many decisions were made with clearly only having the enterprise market in mind. Adding Elasticsearch, a great piece of tech is for sure a good thing, but why deprecate and fully remove the existing MySQL search for this, that would still be fine for many merchants using Magento. Why add even more complexity and costs? Who benefits from making Magento harder to use and pricier? Enterprise users might not care about this, for us as an agency it is nice to work with new technology, but for huge parts of the community, such decisions are just a – sorry – kick in the ass…

A Marketplace Doing Things...

Btw, what is the idea behind removing the option to download purchased extensions from Magento Marketplace?
No question, installation via composer is technically the preferable way for installing extensions, but why deny customers to install extensions manually if they prefer it this way???
What’s the mission of Magento Marketplace here?
Educating their paying customers like small kids “Uhoh, nono, don’t eat too many sweets, that’s bad!” or is it about making money and serving the community by providing an infrastructure for the distribution of extensions for everyone?
How about giving everyone the freedom of choice on how to run their sites?
Thanks to this decision by the multi-billion-dollar company Adobe to not allow direct downloads anymore, we as a small agency are now getting tons of requests to provide our extensions + updates as .zip packages. As an extension vendor, we pay 30%(!) of our revenue to Adobe for providing us with the e-commerce platform for selling our extensions. On top of that, we are now busy sending out .zip packages manually.
Correct me if I am wrong, but this is not e-commerce as it should be…

[Here was another paragraph with a small rant about Magento Marketplace, but decided not to publish it. It's not all bad and there are good folks trying their best to improve things.
But honestly, our main business is building and operating online marketplaces for our clients. Seeing how things are run at Magento Marketplace sometimes breaks my heart. We would be already out of business if we would provide the same service to our clients...]

The Luma Disaster

Maybe the most obvious example is the Luma Frontend. Criticized from day 1 of its release, did it never really satisfy the expectations of neither developers nor merchants. Even more so since the bar for performance has been raised by Google via Lighthouse score updates and the introduction of Core Web Vitals KPIs. Guess nobody will seriously argue that Luma is a competitive frontend that can meet today’s expectations of users, developers, customers, and merchants.
Luma is another example of things gone wrong in the last years, with concerns from the community being ignored. With Adobe's only answer being the development of PWA Studio, yet another solution that is only targeted and suitable for enterprise-scale clients, while essentially abandoning and deprecating the Luma frontend.

As a result of these recent developments, the Magento Community is bleeding.
The loss of trust in Adobe being a good home for Magento and being able to provide a viable future for Magento as an open-source product and the people working with Magento is driving more and more community members away.
The number of developers contributing to Magento and the number of PRs by the community has reached a record low. More and more developers and agencies move on and start working with alternative solutions to stay alive, merchants decide to use other cart systems with lower TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) and a more modern tech stack.
It's about time to stop that bleeding, something needs to be done!
There is no question, seeing the overwhelming feedback, both in quantity as well as in quality, the Open Letter came just about at the right time and hit a nerve!

To be honest, I have no idea how the lost trust can be fully rebuilt, at least not short-term. Building trust is not an easy task and takes time. But re-building trust, once it has been lost, is even harder. Deeds count more than words.

The response from Adobe to the letter so far, to be honest, are not much more than lip service from my point of view. A small post in a community forum, not even directly mentioning the letter, the (so far toothless tiger) Magento Association (it seems I signed up for this MA a long time ago, at least I get the spam emails…) promising the setup of a task force until the end of the year, some Adobe employees joining the MeetMagento Poland panel discussion (silently for understandable reasons).
It's not enough. What the community needs now are actions, changes, for the better, fast.

Personally, I think the current setup with Magento being fully owned and governed by Adobe with the community only following with what they get is and will never be a setup that allows Magento (incl. Adobe Commerce) to prosper and reach its full potential.
Managing an open-source product as big as Magento is a huge responsibility. Its hundreds of thousands of people depending on Magento, making their living from it. Merchants, agencies, developers, you name it.
I don’t think Adobe ever will or can stand up for this responsibility. Adobe is too big and not a company that has its roots in open-source. For Adobe, Magento is just one small part of their Experience Cloud services, which altogether accounts for only ~25% of their revenue.
Any decision Adobe takes, will always try to be in the best interest of their stakeholders and paying customers (can’t blame them for this, it’s how companies work). With Magento being just a tiny puzzle piece within their service offering, it will never play a key role in their decision-making. After all, even the name "Magento" does not exist anymore as part of the Adobe services but has been eliminated and replaced by "Adobe Commerce" now. Not a too big deal for me or anyone who can connect the dots, but for sure not helpful for strengthening the Magento brand or a sign of commitment to Magento by Adobe.
At the very best, Adobe could see the Magento Open-Source and the Community as a strategic asset. But let me explain with a small side story why I don’t think that can or will work:

Maybe you remember Nokia, the once giant mobile phone manufacturer with almost a monopoly.
At some point, they lost market share in rapid speed to new competitors (namely Apple and Google) who had the better product. Nokia simply could not compete anymore with their outdated mobile OS “Symbian”. At this time Nokia already had a great alternative at hand, based on the open-source mobile OS Maemo/MeeGo developed together with Intel and a vibrant and passionate community and some proprietary parts on top. Probably everyone who owned the only phone running this OS, the legendary Nokia N9, still gets sentimental thinking about it today, it was outstanding and way ahead of its time.
However, in order to stop the downtrend, Nokia appointed a former Microsoft manager as the new CEO. Instead of taking the chance and build competitive products based on this already available open-source platform, the new CEO decided to jump in bed with another dying mobile OS: Windows Mobile. The internal Maemo/MeeGo development team was fired.
The result: Nokia, as it was known, is dead, Windows Mobile is gone
(MeeGo took a serious hit but lives on as open-source under the name SailfishOS). 

Of course, the situation around Nokia and MeeGo back then was different from Adobe and Magento now. But still, this example shows how decisions in big companies are made.
Decisions in companies are not always made rationally, not always following the technically best route, but what seems to be the lowest risk, easy to explain/sell to stakeholders. Decisions are politically motivated or (even personally) biased. Decisions are made based on financial sheets and to satisfy shareholders.
And this is the point here: Magento and especially the Magento community does not exist in Adobes books. The Adobe shareholders don’t know Magento, they only know something called “Adobe Experience Cloud”.

How is it about Adobe Management outside the Magento/Commerce division?
Do they know about the Magento community, about what it means, and what tremendous value it provides to Adobe?
Even if not accounted for in their financial statements, do they have a view outside their books and recognize the strategic value Magento and especially its community brings to the table?
I am afraid, looking at how things are going recently, looking at the decisions made as well as the communication we see, the answer is:
No, they don’t.

The Open Letters main message to me: Magento Is Not Dead!

Far from it, thanks to the amazing Magento Community, I am confident we have a bright and long future ahead. The energy and passion that is shown by the letters, the people behind as well as countless responses to these letters clearly show the community can and will take care of this.
However, hope dies last, I still hope Adobe stays on board with a strong commitment and willingness to help and support developing the full potential of Magento and catering to all needs within the community.

The Luma example shows how much Adobe can benefit from a clear commitment to Magento Open-Source:
It took 1 (amazing) person from the community, Willem Wigman, to come up with Hyvä Theme.
The alternative frontend that Magento so desperately needed. A frontend that finally makes Magento a serious option again for merchants that cannot afford or simply do not want to go down the PWA path. A highly modern frontend that can also be a valuable improvement for Adobe Commerce clients.

So, Adobe, here it is, your center of innovation, your shadow workforce of developers and agencies improving and advertising your product for you and your customers:
Take the Magento Community by your hand, let’s have a bright future together.

If I had a wish: Magento would be owned by a body that is governed by both, Adobe and the community, as equal partners. And this body is responsible to manage the activities and development around Magento, balancing the needs of both partners, but at a faster pace as we have seen in the last years.
I believe something like this would be the setup that would allow both sides, Adobe, and the community, to benefit the most. Without any side having to worry about losing the grounds of their business at some point.
